CASTRO GETS THE GIFT

By Tom Simrak, Speedway from turn two

I hope nobody minds to much, but tonight I may sound a
little opinionated. I do not mean any disrespect to anyone. Tonights
racing started out with all the makings of a great night. The air was cool,
a slight breeze blowing from the south, Sudden Sam Ermolenko was
back in town. This looked like it was going to be great. Then the first race started.
On the first lap of the first race, Rookie rider Jason Daniels went down.
No big thing. He got back up, Brushed the dirt and...was DQed for causing
the red flag.It seems to me that the ref should have considered the fact that
this was a rookie, the first race of the night and we want the riders to be happy also.
On the re-start, first turn lap one Eddie Casrto goes down causing a red flag. No big
deal he gets up and brushes the dirt and... is allowed to re-start. I do not understand
what the difference was. Now I realize the ref has a tuff job and I mean no disrespect.
Really I don't. Well it got worse. Event 12 was Andy Northrup, Eddie castro, Steve Lucero
and Charlie Cooley. Lucero got the gate while Casrto and Northrup battled hard for second
spot and the transfer to the semi's. At the finish it was Lucero,
Northrup, Castro and Cooley. Northrup beast Castro by at least 3/4 of a bike length. It
was not even close. So Getting the tranfer to the semi's was Lucero and...Castro.
What about the guy that finished second? I remember a time about 3 or 4 years ago this same
thing to Brad Oxley and another rider. Oxley was givin the gift by the ref. The only
difference was that Oxley was enough of a sport to come back on the track and tell the ref
that he did not win. That was probably the best show of sportsmanship I have ever seen at
speedway. Maybe castro should have done the same thing. Nope I'm not done yet. Later in the
night, John Aden was DQed for touching the tapes. He touched them with his visor on his helmet.
Sounds like a gate malfunction to me. Ok enough of the ref bashing. It was great to see the
1993 National and 1993 WORLD champion back. He aint lost a thing. It took him a while to get
dialed in, but once he did he was awsome. Most of the racing was great tonight. I sat next to
the children of support rider Stan Galvez, They were two of the best behaived children I have
seen in a long time. And talk about supporting the dad. Only wish he had won.
OK it's late here are the results.
