Y2K Season Opener

The year 2000 season at Costa Mesa open Saturday night to a large crowd of seasoned fans. The racing was intense and the track could not have been in better shape. Early in the night there was plenty of dirt for some outside moves. As the night progressed however the line did move in a bit. The new season provided us with a few new riders as well as a few guys from up north. Ryan Fisher made a return to Costa Mesa as well as 1992 National Champ Chris Manchester. (one of my all-time favorite riders) Manchester said in an interview with RAZ VIDEO that he was planning on staying in So Cal for the remainder of the season. Give Manchester a full season at the bull ring and he has to be a favorite to win the final championship ever at Costa Mesa. Making a great season debut was Jim Estes and "The Rocket, Randy DiFransesco. The Rocket, Riding on a still heeling shattered heal bone, made it to the Handicap main and held the lead for four laps until the heel pain was just to great. If not for a red flag in Randy's scratch semi, he would have also made the scratch main. In his semi, Randy was well in the lead when Ryan Fisher crashed bringing out a red flag. On the restart Randy was unable to hold the pole and failed to transfer. Watch out for the Rocket this season. He is on fresh equipment and has fire in his eyes. You can also now visit Randy's official web site at www.randytherocket.8k.com. Drop randy an e-mail and wish him a good season.
As far a race results for opening night. The handicap main event went to Charlie the edge Venegas. The Scratch main was won by Gary Hicks on his new Yamaha sponsored Jawa. Look for Gary to have a good season with his new major sponsorship from Yamaha.
The support main was won by Danny Perkins and the support B main was taken by Kevin Fereira from Sacramento.
